Job Description
We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Director of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) to lead and manage all HSE initiatives across our organization. This position will be responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy workplace for all employees, compliance with regulatory requirements, and the implementation of environmental sustainability programs. The Director will play a key role in shaping the safety culture, developing policies, and managing risk assessments to minimize safety incidents and environmental impacts. The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader with a track record of driving HSE performance in the first of its kind biorefinery of tomorrow.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
•Lead the development and implementation of the company’s health, safety, and environmental strategies.
•Provide leadership to the HSE team and drive the development and execution of the HSE strategy in alignment with corporate objectives.
•Provide guidance and support to senior leadership on HSE related matters.
•Foster a company-wide culture of health, safety, and environmental sustainability.
•Drive continuous improvement in HSE performance across all departments.
Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management
•Lead the identification, assessment, and mitigation of health, safety, and environmental risks.
•Develop and implement preventive measures to reduce accidents, injuries, and environmental impacts.
•Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations, standards, and codes of practice at local, state, and federal levels.
•Oversee audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
•Maintain records and reports related to HSE activities and ensure documentation meets regulatory requirements.
Policy Development & Training
•Develop, implement, and enforce HSE policies and procedures along with training programs to enhance employee awareness and foster a safety-conscious work culture.
•Ensure ongoing education for employees regarding health, safety, and environmental best practices.
•Promote and drive employee participation in safety and environmental initiatives.
Incident Management & Reporting
•Lead investigations into workplace accidents, near misses, injuries, and environmental incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
•Prepare and submit incident reports and regulatory reports as required.
•Track and report on key performance indicators related to safety and environmental goals.
Sustainability Initiatives
•Lead efforts to minimize the company’s environmental footprint.
•Develop and promote sustainability initiatives to ensure compliance with environmental laws and contribute to corporate social responsibility.
Budget and Resource Management
•Oversee the HSE department’s budget, resources, and staffing, ensuring effective utilization and allocation of resources.
Continuous Improvement
•Stay updated of industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices.
•Implement continuous improvement processes for the company’s health, safety, and environmental programs.
•Other duties as assigned
Requirements
•Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene or related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
•At least 10 years of experience in a leadership role within Health, Safety, and Environmental management, preferably in oil and gas or petrochemical industries.
•Certification in HSE related fields (e.g., Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or OSHA certified safety professional) are highly preferred.
•Prior experience and applied knowledge of handling flammable chemicals is required.
•Strong applied knowledge of HSE regulations, industry standards, and environmental laws.
•Proven experience in risk management, incident investigation, and policy development.
•Ability to lead, inspire, and motivate a cross-functional team.
•Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with all levels of the organization.
•Experience with sustainability programs and environmental management systems is an asset.
•Ability to engage with employees at all levels to promote positive safety awareness.
•Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
•Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office.
•Preference will be given to local candidates.
Physical Demands
Frequent lifting and moving of items up to fifty (50) pounds, bending, reaching above shoulder level, climbing stairs, pulling, prolonged standing or sitting may be required. Must have safe work habits and perform all duties in accordance with company safety policies and practices.
