Commnunications Technician III

Specific Responsibilities

The Field Communications Technician III at Apache Corporation will be a key member of the Apache Team, based in the company’s Midland office and reporting to the US-Onshore Field Communications Foreman. This role supports field operations by ensuring reliable, safe, and efficient communication systems across Apache’s assets.

- Collaborate with operations, automation, security, and IT teams to assess and support field communication needs.

- Comply with all company policies, procedures, and safety standards.

- Actively participate in Apache’s environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs and culture.

- Coordinate tower installations with contractors, including 811 line locates, ensuring safe practices.

- Supervise contractor activities to ensure safety and efficient use of materials and labor.

- Work independently with minimal supervision.

- Apply basic knowledge of oil and gas production operations and reservoir management.

- Develop and maintain standardized installation and documentation practices in line with Apache policies.

- Maintain accurate documentation and inventory of communication hardware; forecast and manage ordering needs.

- Utilize extensive knowledge of DC electronics and basic understanding of AC electrical systems.

- Conduct topographic analysis for line-of-sight (LOS) assessments and design wireless communication solutions (point-to-point and point-to-multipoint) using licensed and unlicensed frequencies.

- Monitor network infrastructure, troubleshoot outages, and provide timely situational reports.

- Ensure integrity of physical communication assets, including radio masts, remote site towers, backhaul towers, and associated antenna gear/cabling.

- Provide training and support to Automation, Measurement, and Well Technicians.

- Maintain up-to-date firmware on all field communication devices.

- Understand FAA and FCC regulations, including filings, clearance requirements, obstruction lighting, and ASSE/TIA standards.

- Demonstrate knowledge of 2-way and serial radio systems, microwave and wireless system design, RF coverage analysis, and tower site acquisition.

- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Visio).

- Understand networking protocols including Ethernet, TCP/IP, wireless, routing, and switching.

- Evaluate and recommend cost-effective radio communication systems for production applications.

- Research and evaluate new communication technologies and innovative solutions.

- Review and process related invoices accurately and promptly.

- Ensure projects remain within budget and reconcile costs effectively.

Qualifications & Experience

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and experience:

- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree preferred.

- Minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience.
